Hiring in hospitality changes pace

Hiring in hospitality changed pace in the Autumn, according to our most recent analysis of job posting data. The reopening rebound experienced by the industry has dissipated as talent shortages, increasing energy costs, and gloomy consumer sentiment have all combined to create an adjustment in recruitment. Across Q3 jobs fell back 25% compared to the same period last year and 16% compared to the previous three months of 2022.

Given the scale of the surge in demand for staff in 2021, the year-on-year fallback is perhaps not unexpected. And while the quarter-on-quarter data indicates a softening in hiring. However, hospitality continues to surpass all other sectors on Jobs.ie when it comes to the sheer number of available opportunities.

Christopher Paye, General Manager of Jobs.ie says the ongoing high demand for talent has put a sustained focus on talent attraction strategies.

“Our expert Customer Success team work closely with employers to ensure their jobs are optimised to achieve positive results, offering advice and guidance to hospitality recruiters of all sizes so they can be confident their roles are reaching the right candidates.

However, as any recruitment expert will tell you, a successful hiring strategy begins long before a vacancy is ever advertised online. Over the last eighteen months, Jobs.ie has been working closely with Failte Ireland, sharing our data insights, learnings, and expertise into the hiring challenges across the industry. I warmly welcome the launch of Failte Ireland’s new Employer Excellent Programme; it is a move that can only yield positive results for recruiters.

Meanwhile, the new law giving staff a legal right to their tips and the upcoming introduction of the new minimum wage, pension auto-enrolment, and statutory sick pay will not only improve working conditions for the thousands of people working in the sector but support employers with talent retention and go some way to making the industry attractive to new jobseekers.”
