If you enjoy the challenge of trying to brighten someone’s day, or else you have a naturally competitive personality, it may be worth checking out job vacancies for sales assistants in Ireland.

It is all too common for applicants to spend so much time worrying about the prospect of an interview, that they fail to put in the time and effort it takes to write a great tailored sales assistant cover letter.

It is a shame to pour heart and soul into a CV only to either neglect or put in a half-hearted attempt at a cover letter.

Hiring managers will tell you that a cover letter is every bit as important as a tailored sales assistant CV. It enables you to include details that don’t fit within a CV’s structure, and a well-crafted one is certain to help you stand out.

How to Write a Sales Assistant Cover Letter

One of the benefits of taking the time to format this important tome is that you can gain an advantage over other candidates even if it is your first time applying for a job in the industry. A no experience sales assistant cover letter helps you to become specific about why you’re interested in the position, and why you’re the best person to fill the vacancy.

Whether the job is that of a customer sales assistant, part-time sales assistant, or fashion sales assistant, the anatomy of a great cover letter remains the same.

Formatting, Font & Brevity

When in doubt, keep it short! 3-4 paragraphs on a single page is more than enough. If it is over 400 words, start trimming the fat. Remember, it is a brief introduction that is supposed to give the reader a better idea of who you are, NOT your life story.

As is the case with your CV, keep the cover letter easy to read. Don’t use more than two fonts and don’t try an ‘experimental’ style.

Address the Letter Appropriately

It is a grave error to address your cover letter with “To whom it may concern.” In a sea of applications, your cover letter won’t stand out. In the age of the Internet, there is no excuse not to learn the name of the hiring manager.

Your first stop should be LinkedIn. If that doesn’t work, contact the company and ask who is in charge of the hiring process for the role. Although it is the right thing to do, many hiring managers don’t like candidates trying to contact them directly, so don’t leave your name.

Creating a Narrative

After a brief introductory paragraph, use the next section to outline why you’re interested in the position, highlight why you’re the right fit, and emphasise what you can bring that no one else can. We recommend looking at the job description and choosing 2-3 aspects of it that you excel in.

It is also essential to inject some enthusiasm into your cover letter. Go back to the job description again. Which part(s) of it make you the most excited? Do you relish the challenge of meeting sales targets, or do you enjoy the challenge of keeping up to date with new products?

Focus on the Company’s Needs

The company already knows you want the job so please refrain from anything that relates to personal gain. For instance, don’t say that you’re looking forward to using the role as a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

When mentioning your skills, achievements, and experience, you need to do so in a way that shows how it benefits the company.

Dear Mr. White,

I am sending this cover letter, and accompanying CV, in relation to the Sales Assistant role advertised on Jobs.ie. With five years of retail sales experience in several different types of store, I have experienced almost everything the role has to offer. As you can see from my CV, the sales knowledge and skills I have learned during my career to date ensure that I am an ideal candidate.

In my current role at Lynch’s Superstore, I have been given a significant level of responsibility, including the supervision of a team of 20 employees in the manager’s absence. The role also involves dealing with hundreds of customers per day. During my time at Lynch’s, I have created a method of improving customer satisfaction that has decreased complaints by 25% in six months.

As your store is one of the busiest in the region and known for its high level of customer service, I believe my experience and skills will help me fit into your company culture while also meeting your company’s extremely high standards. Another important duty at Lynch’s includes counting the day’s takings and depositing the money and receipts in the safe. Aside from the manager and one supervisor, I am the only other employee entrusted with this role.

Customers at Lynch’s, and Johnson’s Foods (my previous employer) have often complimented me on my patient and calm manner when dealing with dissatisfied customers. In my career to date, I have found that allowing a customer to clear the air and vent their anger a little helps to de-escalate the situation. Overall, I have a genuine desire to help customers and enjoy the day-to-day challenges provided by my role as a sales assistant.

I would be delighted to join the team at White’s and continue to help customers learn more about the products and services on offer while finding the right fit for their specific needs.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours Sincerely,

Barry Johnson
