Job Description

IGB GRADUATE SOFTWARE ENGINEER

ONE YEAR FIXED-TERM CONTRACT

Bord na gCon also known as the Irish Greyhound Board (IGB) has responsibility for the promotion, regulation and ongoing development of the Greyhound industry in Ireland.  The organisation has a small IT Department who manage a wide range of IT solutions including in-house software development of specific IGB applications as well as the management of third party specialised solution partners (EngagedWeb).

The key technologies are ASP.NET,  SQL Server 2012,HTML, JavaScript and CSS.

All of the IGB’s source code is hosted in Git version control system on GitHub and it is accessed by IGB and EngagedWeb.

The top five systems are briefly defined here to provide a feel for the business

  1. Race Management System

We have a race management system (RMS) hosted by Eircom in their data Centre located at Clonsaugh, Dublin. The RMS is accessed by track staff at 17 greyhound tracks around the country and by staff in HQ in Greenpark Dock Road, Limerick. The Tracks use the RMS to build race cards, enter results, grade greyhounds and pay out prize money (via EFT) to owners and trainers. The RMS is the business critical system to the industry and underpins the greyhound racing product. It is a web based application which was developed in .NET and SQL 2012. The system was released on November 27 2006. Since the release date approximately thirty service packs have been deployed.

  1. Website/IWP

Our websites http://www.igb.ie , www.gogreyhoundracing.ie (plus each track portal, for example www.Shelbournegreyhoundstadium.ie ) are hosted at Eircom and are linked back to the RMS SQL 2012 database. The website Content Management system is EPiServer 7.5.

Bord nag Con also manages an Internet Wagering Platform (IWP) https://barkingbuzz.ie.This IWP allows the public to bet online on Irish greyhound racing. Live streaming is provided on the website by Sportech (our streaming partner).

An integral part of the website/IWP is a CRM database which is also hosted in Clonsaugh.

Customers can book a wide variety of packages for Board owned tracks on www.gogreyhoundracing.ie. Our website interfaces with IGB’s booking partner http://www.restaurantdiary.com via web services and customers pay for the packages using Realex.

  1. IGB Microchip Scanning App

The IGB have been integrating new procedures for all greyhounds to be microchipped. For this we are in the process of creating an Android Application using Java. This app communicates with the RMS using Web services and talks to a scanner over the serial port. The App is only going to be used by internal IGB staff.

  1. Web Services

IGB have built and host a large number of web services which are used by our partners to obtain Race Card and race result information. Web services are also used to communicate with our app and with our tote partners.

  1. Data Warehousing

IGB house a SQL 2012 warehouse which feeds into a Reporting System. Sportech supply IGB with all our nightly tote betting data. This is fed into our data warehouse. Other data such as Gate & Attendance information are fed from other sources.  Track managers access the KPI’s and Reports via their desktops.

Planned IT work in 2016

This is an indicator to the scope of the work:

  1. Upgrade of IGB’s Race management system

The Race management system is IGB’s core system. It is however 10 years old and only run in Internet Explorer. IGB plan to upgrade the race management system to run in Google Chrome.

  1. Further development of IGB’s Internet Wagering Platform (IWP) https://barkingbuzz.ie.

IGB are working with our Tote partner to add horse racing to the site.

  1. Significant development of IGB’s restaurant booking engine gogreyhondracing.ie

IGB are working with our software development  partners EngagedWeb to upgrade the restaurant bookings engine

  1. Further Development - IGB Microchip Scanning App

Upgrading Android Application using Java. This app communicates with the RMS using Web services and talks to a scanner over the serial port. The App is only going to be used by internal IGB staff.
