Unit 2: Legislation

Relevant sections of the Safety, Health and Welfare Work Act 1989 and how that impacts on the role of employers and employees.
The Childcare Act 1991 and its implications for childcare workers
Child protection legislation and the duty of care placed on the childcare worker.

Unit 3: Working with Parents

Role played by parents in children’s welfare
How different family approaches affect children’s behavior
Working with the parents
Communicating effectively with parents

Unit 4: Relating to parents, children and the childcare team

The value of good interpersonal skills in childcare
Use of verbal and non-verbal communication in the childcare setting
Listening attentively to the child
Different methods of giving and receiving information
The importance of confidentiality
Working effectively as part of a team
Responsibilities of the childcare assistant and the supervisor

Unit 5: Personal reflection

Who should participate in this course?

The course is designed to familiarise learners with knowledge of childcare provision in Ireland.

General Aims

Familiarise learners with the current status of childcare in Ireland

Understand the current range of roles in childcare support organizations

Make Learners more aware of the personal qualities needed to be an effective childcare worker

Understand the entitlements and responsibilities of the childcare worker

Develop professionally in childcare personal reflection and experience

Promote equality of opportunity

Understand the importance of working effectively within the childcare team and with parents

Entry Requirements

No Specific entry requirements. Minimum age is 17 years.

Learners must also be capable of undertaking assessment work to Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate standard.

International learners undertaking this course should have confidence in their English language, reading, writing and have at least a 5 IELTS score or equivalent.

Work Experience

A minimum of 25 hours in a childcare setting, with children 0-6 years. These hours may be taken into account if learners undertake the FETAC Level 5 Work Experience module within a two-year period.
