Special Needs Assistant Level 6 - Start Date May 2012


Course Syllabus

This programme covers the following topics in depth and learners are expected to complete additional self directed learning and research:

  • Individual Education Programmes/Plans
  • Primary School Curriculum
  • Secondary School Curriculum
  • Information Technologies for the child with a specific special need
  • Visual Arts, Music and Drama
  • Literacy skills when working with children with special needs
  • Personal and Professional Development
  • Job Interview skills

 

 

Entry Requirements

All learners must be fluent English speakers.

To qualify for the Special Needs Assistant FETAC Level 6 learners must have also successfully completed the Special Needs Assistant Training Certificate with The College of Progressive Education.

For other learners we would recommend that they have successfully completed at least one Special Needs Assistant component certificate at FETAC Level 5.

Learners should capable of undertaking self directed learning.

Applicants should also indicate how they plan to obtain their work experience during the course if they are not already working in the area.

Currently the Department of Education and Science stipulates that all those gaining full-time employment within the school system must have a full Junior Certificate or equivalent qualification including English, Irish and Mathematics.

 

Career Options

Special Needs Assistant in Primary, Secondary or Montessori schools
Care Assistant in a day care or residential setting
Special Needs Assistant working with pre-school children.

Special Needs Assistant Component Certificate in Special Needs Assistant (FETAC Level 6)

 


Who should participate in this course?

This course is specifically designed for people who have successfully completed the  Special Needs Assistant Training programme with the College of Progressive Education.

The programme is also designed for those Learners who have successfully completed other Special Needs Assistant programmes at Level 5 and who want to obtain a FETAC Level 6 Component Certificate in Special Needs Assistant. Learners should contact the College to check the eligibility of their previous programme.

 

 


General Aims
  • Enable learners to further develop the knowledge and skills
  • Explore aspects of the role in more detail in order to enhance their effectiveness when working with children with special needs

Work Experience

Learners who are eligible to complete the Special Needs Certificate Level 5 need to complete a minimum of 50 hours work experience in a supervised special needs setting with children under the age of 18 yrs. Ideally in a school setting. This is not required for the FETAC Level 6 Component Certificate.

Work experience may be undertaken in a paid or voluntary capacity

 

Assessment Method
Continuous assessment based on project and two assignments.
 

Further Studies

Advanced Certificate in Supervision in Childcare FETAC Level 6
Degree in Early education in a third level college
Advanced Certificate in the Montessori Method of Education

 

Duration
Six months (approx), with two compulsory Saturday workshops, held in Dublin City Centre.
