Operating an Early Years Centre

Course Syllabus

Unit 1: Administration

  • Different types of ECCE settings
  • Types of management structures and financial implications of each
  • Maintaining accurate accounts
  • Keeping employment records for tax purposes and making relevant returns
  • Employment law: legal rights and entitlements of employees and responsibilities of employers
  • Efficient operation of financial and physical resources
  • Accessing potential funding
  • Planning of special and day-to-day events


Unit 2: Working as a Team: Staff, Parents and Committees

  • Drawing up a job description and personal profile requirements for an ECCE worker
  • Recruiting, interviewing and inducting new staff
  • Preparing an employment contract
  • Working as a team
  • Working with parents
  • Role of the ECCE committee
  • Meeting procedures


Unit 3: Policies and Procedures

  • Importance of aims and objectives in formulating policies and procedures
  • Drawing up policies on a range of ECCE issues
  • Implementing policies in partnership with parents
  • Complying with statutory and non-statutory requirements

Qualifications

Component Certificate in Operating an Early Years Centre (FETAC Level 5)
Certificate in Operating an Early Years Centre (The College of Progressive Education)

 


Who should participate in this course?

This course is designed to make participants aware of the various duties and responsibilities involved in running an  Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) centre, whether privately or community based. The centre could be a parent and toddler group, pre-school, sessional crèche, childminding etc.

 


General Aims

This course will enable the learner to:

  • Develop an awareness of a wide range of issues involved in the supervision and administration of an ECCE setting
  • Comply with all legal obligations in the area
  • Recognise the responsibilities of the ECCE supervisor with regard to children, parents, staff and committees
  • Develop good employment practice
  • Develop team-building skills to support staff and co-workers
  • Devise policies, procedures and action plans
 


Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualification OR relevant life/work experience

Assessment Method

The learner will complete a portfolio containing the following items:

  • A plan for an event
  • An integrated assignment
  • An outline annual budget projection
