This course investigates the topic of tourism by examining its socio-economic, cultural and environmental impacts and by providing practical knowledge about the day-to-day operations involved in the tourism industry. The current state of tourism and its potential developments are also investigated.

Students will be introduced to tourism and engage with this topic through a number of different disciplines such as marketing, management and communication. Participants will learn skills that will be transferable to tourism industry’s around the world.

What are my Career Prospects with IBAT's Tourism Courses?

On completion of this course graduates have a strong understanding of the tourism industry. This allows graduates to seek employment in a large cross-section of the tourism industry, from general operations to more specific areas, e.g. tourism marketing. Graduates will be equipped with the necessary knowledge to operate competently in areas such as tourism offices, transportation companies, travel agencies, tour operators and visitor attractions.

Tourism is seen as a vital sector to many economies around the world. Here in Ireland, government policy has demonstrated this through its reduced VAT rates for the tourism sector in an attempt to boost economic activity. In the UK, similar measures are being enacted to try and take advantage of their hosting of the Olympic Games during the summer of 2012, which will see a huge influx of people for this event. And in Brazil, where the tourism sector is expected to receive a massive boost with their hosting of both the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016.

Who accredits this Tourism course?

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be awarded a FETAC Major Certificate in Tourism. FETAC is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland, the Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) gives people the opportunity to gain recognition for learning in education or training institutions, in the work place and in the community.

Am I eligible for this Tourism Course?

No unnecessary barriers will be placed within awards structures in relation to access to awards. A learner seeking entry to a programme leading to awards at Level 5 does not need a previous formal qualification. However, potential learners are expected to have engaged in at least one year of an English Language programme.
