Course Syllabus

Unit 1: Understanding play
  • Identifying different types of play
  • Patterns of play
  • Benefits of play
  • Encouraging individual choices in play
  • How play has changed historically
  • What makes an effective play environment
  • The role of the adult
Unit 2: Play Activities
  • Understanding the areas of play
  • Devising play activities within each area of play to promote the child’s development
  • evaluating a variety of play activities
  • demonstrating reading and storytelling techniques
Unit 3 Toys, Games and Equipment
  • Describe the range of materials and equipment for children
  • Link the use of materials to overall development of the child
  • Assessing the value of a toy, game to the child
  • Understanding the importance of storing and displaying play materials
  • Using displays and interest tables
  • Identifying a range of books for 0-7 years
  • Using other materials to support book reading and story telling

Qualifications
Component Certificate in Early Childhood Education (FETAC Level 5)
Certificate in Early Childhood Education (The College of Progressive Education)
 

Who should participate in this course?
This course is designed for leaners who wish to gain knowledge of the links between child development and play.
It will also focus on the importance of play for children and the role of the childcare worker in provision of appropriate play opportunities.
 

General Aims
  • To understand the types and stages of play in child development
  • Understand the links between play and the developing child 
  • Explore the benefits of play for children
  • Plan, carry out and review play activities appropriate to a child’s stage of development
  • Understand the role and responsibility of the childcare worker when playing with children
 

Entry Requirements
  • Minimum age is 17 years
  • Leaving certificate or equivalent qualification OR relevant life/work experience
  • International learners undertaking this course should have confidence in their English language, reading, writing and comprehension skills and have at least a 5 IELTS score or equivalent.
  • Application form MUST be accompanied by a letter explaining
    • Why you wish to undertake this course module
    • Your previous experience in childcare
    • Where you intend to gain your work experience

 
Work Experience
A minimum of 25 hours must be completed during the module. These hours
are taken into account if learners undertake the FETAC Level 5 work experience
module within a two year period.
 

Assessment Method
The learner will be asked to do two assignments and skills demonstration – An assessment of the learners skills in demonstrating how to recite poetry, read a book or tell a story to a group of children
 

Further Studies
Additional FETAC level 5 modules to progress to National Award in Childcare.
 

Career Options
Crèche or Pre-school worker, professional nanny or childminder.
