“Develop Technology Driven Fortification Strategies”
 
A Diploma in Countering High Tech Crime has been developed in association with Dorset College, celebrating 27 years in professional training across many fields.

The Diploma in High Tech Crime has been developed by experts in the field to impart training in data-driven management and investigative support.  This High Tech Crime course is designed for Supervisors and Managers involved in the supervision, strategy and policy making in organisations and corporations with an extensive IT infrastructure.  The Diploma is designed to ensure that delegates are equipped with the knowledge and skills to meet the challenges set by criminals who use technology in their unlawful activities.  Participants are taught how to ask the right questions, deal correctly with digital devices, investigate Internet and network crimes, conduct forensic IT investigations, and know when specialist skills are needed and where to find them.  The High Tech Crime course will also suit graduate students with an interest in a career in criminal or forensic investigation.

The Diploma in Hi Tech Crime course will be delivered by a panel of professional & academic lecturers.  Most have postgraduate qualifications, many are published in their areas of expertise and all are employed in forensic settings.

Pre-requisites

Access to the Diploma in High Tech Crime is open to all, however, applicants should be computer literate to ensure maximum benefit from the programme.  Applicants are advised to apply as early as possible as demand for places is high.  Applications must be received and approved prior to course registration.

Course Aim

The aim of the High Tech crime course is to study the principles of Cybercrime investigation providing students with an understanding of the phenomenon and how different disciplines can contribute to prevention and detection.  Case studies will be used to demonstrate the application of these concepts.

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of computers and digital online technologies.
  • Investigate Mobile Phone Forensics.
  • Explain the concepts of Hacking, Phreaking, Phishing and Viruses.
  • Discuss Hacker attitudes and Hacker methods and the culture of Hacking.
  • Discuss Famous Hackers.
  • Explain how forensic practitioners can obtain and use computer data and online information to assist in investigations.
  • Discuss funding issues around internet crime.
  • Explain the management and resource implications of digital crime investigations.
  • Otline effective criminal investigative response techniques.
  • utline how to establish and maintain an audit trail.

The aim of the Diploma in High Tech Crime is to share with participants a wealth of experience and knowledge in the field of high tech crime focusing on crime prevention rather than detection.

Principal Areas of Study

The Diploma in High Tech Crime is composed of three modules:

Cyber Crime Investigation

  • This module provides hand-on experience with criminal investigative techniques.  Participants learn how to initially approach an electronic or online crime scene; the importance of following proper procedure and protocol in uplifting evidence and how to insure the integrity and chain of evidence rules that will be acceptable in a court of law.
  • The value of electronic financial data in establishing possible criminal activity is outlined. 
  • Electronic Fraud will be discussed.

Telecommunications and Crime

  • The dynamics of Mobile Phone forensics will be examined in detail.
  • Delegates will explore the areas of cell site analysis, analysing telecommunications records, charting and mapping complex information.
  • The use of timelines in summarising information will also be explored.

The Internet and Crime

  • This module focuses on the significant role that the internet plays in funding terrorism.
  • Problematic uses of the internet such as online pedophiliac networks will also be discussed.
  • Social networking and criminal activity will be discussed as an emergent phenomenon.

    A 10% discount is abailable to the unwaged - limit per class applies

Assessment

The High Tech crime course will be delivered using a variety of methods including lectures and seminars.  Students will have the opportunity in seminars to participate in group discussions.  Seminars will also allow students to work together in teams to problem solve and critically evaluate various methods of criminal and forensic investigation. Students will be assessed by way of a multiple choice examination and a reflective practice exercise (1,000-1250 words).

Awards

Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates will receive a Diploma in High Tech Crime from Dorset College.  Further accreditation for this programme is anticipated from Education Development International - a leading provider of vocational qualifications and an awarding body accredited by the UK regulatory authorities.
