The Certificate in DeskTop Publishing course combines basic desktop publishing skills and graphics design principles with the specifics of how to use Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Adobe Acrobat to create visual communications. It will teach users how to harness the power of these packages to develop different types of documents from simple flyers to newsletters. You will learn how to package your document for print to get the most from the final design. 

For Whom

The course assumes no previous knowledge of the software. It aims to enable delegates to be able to produce a broad range of documents including newsletters, product leaflets, adverts, posters and sales material for either internal use or for commercial printing. At the end of the course participants will have a good knowledge of the various tools and features.


Over 23 (Mature Student) or 5 (Ord) D3s in Leaving Certificate or equivalent exam taken. User of MAC/MS Applications. 

Course Duration

5 Saturdays x 5 Days (9.30am-3.30pm) or 10 Weeks x 1 Evening (6.30pm – 9.00pm)


The certification process for the Desk Top Publishing course is assessment based and will involve four separate assessments, one for each of the packages in the course curriculum.

Adobe Photoshop

The student will be required to prepare a set of photographs for inclusion in a commercial printing project. This will involve checking the resolution of the images and resizing them to the appropriate dimensions. The student will also be required to apply some Image Adjustments to the pictures and to demonstrate their knowledge of Layers, Layer Styles and Text. All the files for the assessment will be supplied and the student will be graded based on creativity and technical ability.

Adobe Illustrator

The student will be required to create a sample illustration for inclusion in a commercial printing project.

·         Proofing a Document
·         Saving Images for the Web and Print

Adobe InDesign

The student will be required to prepare a multi-page document for commercial printing. The document will be of 4 pages in length and will contain both text and graphics. The graphics element will be comprised of both Photoshop and Illustrator files. All the files, both images and text, will be supplied. The student will be required to layout the document to the given specifications and insert the given text and graphics elements.

Adobe Acrobat

The student will be required to carry out some editing on a given PDF document. This will entail making some basic text changes and corrections and inserting comments on images and other elements of the document.

·         Navigating to a Specific Content in a PDF Document
·         Updating PDF Documents
·         Working with Multiple PDF Documents
·         Reviewing PDF Documents
·         Validating PDF Documents
·         Converting PDF Files

On conclusion of all four assignments you will receive an Certificate in DeskTop Publishing (ICM).
