Child Protection Awareness

This one day course in Child Protection Awareness is delivered by a Forensic Psychologist with wide experience with both the offenders and the victims, thus providing a unique perspective in this field of study.  It will provide students with a broad understanding of child protection issues from understanding the nature of abuse to development of appropriate recording and reporting procedures.

Course Tutor

Emma Donnelly holds a Higher Diploma in Psychology from University College Dublin and an MSc in Forensic Psychology from the University of Portsmouth, UK.  She has experience in facilitating offending behaviour programmes with an extensive mix of convicted sexual and violent adult male offenders helping them identify and reduce their dynamic risks to re-offending and mapping their progress during and after their incarceration.  Emma also has experience of working with young people in both secure and open residential centres, adults with acquired brain injury, and victims of sexual abuse.  She has experience working within academic and research environments.  She is a Graduate Member of the British Psychological Society and is affiliated with the International Centre for Research in Forensic Psychology.  Emma’s research interests lie in Sexual Offending, Juvenile Offending, Personality Disorders & Offending, Decision Making and Problem Solving among Offenders, False Confessions in Police Interviews, Intimate Partner Homicide and Jury Decision Making.

Pre-requisites

Course Aim

How will you benefit from the Child Protection Course?
An increased awareness of child abuse in Ireland has prompted all organisations who work with children to commit to maintaining and developing clear child protection guidelines. A Child Protection Awareness training course completed by you demonstrates to potential employers that you have an understanding of the complex issues. If you are self-employed such as a crèche owner, dance or drama teacher, or a volunteer in youth work or sports you can be confident that you can face any child protection issue that may present within your organisation, keeping both yourself and those you work with safe. This course can also provide a foundation to those who want to pursue further study in child orientated areas such as youth and community studies, social work and child care.
