Unit 1. Safety

  • Keeping the environment safe
  • Safe storage of materials
  • Guidelines for taking children on outings
  • Managing pets in the childcare environment
  • Managing in the event of a child choking
  • Procedures for resuscitating a baby or child
  • Procedures to handle an accident and a fire
  • Contents of First aid kit
  • Contents of a medical cabinet

Unit 2 Health

  • Personal care routines for children 0-6 years
  • Understanding infection spread and management
  • Current Immunisation programmes
  • Cleaning and sterilising toys and equipment
  • Recognising and caring for a sick child
  • Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
  • Appropriate Exercises and physical activities for children 0-6 years

 

Unit 3 Feeding babies and children

  • Balanced Diet
  • Balanced and appropriate menus
  • Breast feeding/Bottle feeding
  • Feeding problems
  • Healthy snacks
  • Safe management of cold/hot meals
  • Daily food log

Unit 4 Safe and hygienic daily care

  • Clothing and Footwear
  • Nappy changing and care
  • Bathing a baby
  • Toilet training
  • Daily nappy/toilet log

Qualifications

Component Certificate in Caring for Children 0–6 Years (FETAC Level 5)

Certificate in Caring for Children 0-6 Years (The College of Progressive Education)

 

Who should participate in this course?
The module is designed to equip the learner with the skills and knowledge to care for children from 0-6 years either in the home or as part of as supervised team in a childcare setting.  The module aims to promote good proactive, equality of opportunity and respect for diversity in lifestyles, religion and culture and the maintenance of a healthy, hygienic and safe environment for children.
 

General Aims
  • To understand the responsibilities involved in caring for children
  • To care of the physical needs of children from 0-6 years
  • Promote good practice in caring for children
  • Maintain an environment of children that is healthy, hygienic and safe
 

Entry Requirements
  • Learners must hold a nationally recognized First Aid certificate in order to complete this module successfully. A list of recognised courses can be obtained from the Health and Safety Authority.
  • Leaving certificate or equivalent qualification OR relevant life/work experience
  • Application form MUST be accompanied by a letter explaining:
    • Why you wish to undertake this course module
    • Your previous experience in childcare
    • Where you intend to gain your work experience

Work Experience

A minumum of 25 hours during the module. These hours may be taken into account if the learner undertakes FETAC Level 5 Work experience module within a two-year period.

 

Assessment Method
Project, Assessment of practical skills, portfolio of work and examination.
 

Further Studies
Additional FETAC Level 5 modules to progress to National Award in Childcare
