The Department of Health estimates each year in Ireland about 5,000 people of all ages will die from sudden cardiac arrest.
Different from a heart attack, the condition causes the heart to abruptly stop pumping. The most effective way to revive them is with Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) - and the quicker the response, the greater the chance of survival.
The 4 hour Heart Saver basic life support programme is designed towards non-medical persons who can be trained in CPR and the use of AEDs Automated External Defibrillators.
It is an Irish Heart Foundation programme and is intended to enable the lay-rescuer bring the first 3 links in the chain of survival to the causality who may unfortunately suffer a cardiac arrest. The course is a watch then practice DVD.
