Course Syllabus

Unit 1: Introduction to anatomy and physiology

  • Differentiate between Anatomy and Physiology
  • Structure and function of typical animal cells
  • Mitosis and mycosis
  • Different types of tissue
  • Benign and malignant tumours

Unit 2: The skeletal and muscular system

  • The functions of the skeleton
  • Composition of bone
  • Main bones in the skeleton
  • Categories and functions of joints
  • Types of muscles
  • Interaction between skeletal and muscular systems in body movement

Unit 3: The circulatory and lymphatic system

  • The structure and functions of each of the four components of blood
  • Role of blood in maintaining immunity
  • Passive and active immunity
  • Structure of the heart and its blood vessels
  • Structure of arteries, veins and capillaries
  • The flow of blood through the main blood vessels of the body
  • The cardiac cycle
  • Pulse, cardiac output, blood pressure and anaemia
  • Lymphatic system and its components


Unit 4: The digestive system

  • Composition of protein, fats and carbohydrates
  • The parts and functions of the digestive system and its associated organs
  • The stomach and its functions
  • The role of enzymes in the digestion of protein, fat and carbohydrates
  • The process of absorption

Unit 5: The respiratory system

  • Structure of the respiratory system
  • The role of the muscles in inspiration and expiration
  • The process of exchange of gases
  • The role of blood and nervous system in the control of breathing

Unit 6: The nervous and endocrine systems

  • Central nervous system, peripheral and autonomic nervous system
  • Functions of the main part of the brain
  • How a nerve impulse travels along the nervous system
  • Endocrine and exocrine glands
  • Effects of over secretion and/or under secretions of hormones

Unit 7: The reproductive system

  • Male and female reproductive system
  • Functions of the organs of the male and female reproductive systems
  • The menstrual cycle
  • Insemination, fertilisation and implantation
  • The development of the embryo

Unit 8: The urinary system

  • Structure of the urinary system
  • Structure and functions of the kidneys
  • The role of the nervous system in urination

Unit 9: The skin

  • Structure of the skin
  • Function of the skin
  • The relationship between the skin, the circulatory system and the nervous syste

Qualifications

Component Certificate in Anatomy and Physiology (FETAC Level 5)

Certificate in Anatomy and Physiology (The College of Progressive Education)

 


Who should participate in this course?

For learners who wish to complete the FETAC Level 5 Healthcare Support (major award DHSXX) or the Nursing Studies (major award DCHSC) Certificate this is one of the elective modules.
Learners who wish to pursue a career in nursing.

 


General Aims
  • Acquire knowledge of the structure and function of the human body
  • Recognise the human body as an entity
  • Understand the relationship between the systems of the body
 


Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements. Minimum age is 17 years.

Learners must also be capable of undertaking assessment work to Ordinalry Level Leaving Certificate standard.

International learners undertaking this course should have confidence in their English language, reading, writing and comprehension skills and have at least a 5 IELTS score or equivalent

Work Experience

It is recommended, though not essential, that learners obtain at least 20 hours work experience during the programme.

Two Assignments - 40%

Examination - 60%
